A Little About Robby

Robby Sciortino (he/him) is an actor, director, deviser, and overall theatre-maker, originally from Las Cruces, NM, now based in Austin, TX. His work as a director and deviser explores existential and societal trauma through science fiction, paranormal, multi-cultural, and folkloric lenses. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Robby’s goal is to include and portray realistic Queer stories that go beyond the pain and suffering of the community.

When working with an ensemble, his mission is to best utilize each collaborator and their unique skill sets while honing in on the creative vision for the piece. His goal is to create theatrical experiences that leave audiences asking more questions than answering them. Robby is currently working on an MFA in directing from Texas State University and is expecting to graduate in spring 2026. He is a company member of the Paramount Story Wranglers and the Cold Frame Collective.

Robby earned his B.A. in Theatre Arts from New Mexico State University in 2017 and is the recipient of the Herschel Zohn Outstanding Senior Award, "In recognition for outstanding contributions to the Department of Theatre Arts - our highest honor." He was the 2023 Austin Emerging Arts Leader - Theatre Mentee.

Infinity can be overwhelming, but to me, it’s an invitation to cannonball into the universe and splash around in its mysteries.

Infinity can be overwhelming, but to me, it’s an invitation to cannonball into the universe and splash around in its mysteries. As a theatremaker, I feel like an astronomer, staring at the night sky's vastness and noting every detail I see. I wonder about the stories behind every last star. But instead of looking through a large telescope, I look around me. I see the inspiration in every living creature. I watch their movements, their relationships to the world, their day-to-day lives, and I see their stories unfold before me.

When I begin working on a new project, I take one of two routes:

As an actor preparing for a pre-scripted work, I attune myself to the central vision of the director and creative team and construct different prototypes of the character I’ve been cast as. I play with these prototypes in rehearsals, and through relationship-building and character study, I mold them into unique and complex characters.

As a director, it brings me no greater joy than collaborating with actors and design teams to create a new and inspiring experience for an audience. I honor the script and the playwright’s intention while challenging its context with the social situations our world is currently facing.

In my experience with devising new works, I can play the actor and the director. Creating space for each artist's voice and contribution to be told, organizing the ensemble’s thoughts and visions, and translating them into a unified language. I am fascinated with movement and the different pedagogies of stylized movement that help tell the visual story. I enjoy teaching these pedagogies to my collaborators and creating new methods of devising through experimentation.

Ultimately, I love to create and hope to share my stories on a stage near you!
